Protect Your Smile During Cold & Flu Season

When you’re dealing with a cold or the flu, brushing your teeth might not feel like a priority—but it’s more important than you think. Illness can take a toll on your entire body, including your mouth. It’s essential to protect your smile while you recover.

Here are some simple ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy, even when you’re feeling under the weather.

Stay on Track With Brushing & Change Your Toothbrush After Illness

Keeping up your oral hygiene while sick helps prevent the buildup of bacteria in your mouth. Germs can live on moist surfaces like your toothbrush, so it’s best not to share it with anyone. Once you’ve recovered, replace your brush—especially if it’s been three months or longer since your last swap.

For extra protection while you’re sick, rinse your toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide or mouthwash after use.

Choose Cough Drops That Won’t Harm Your Teeth

Cough drops and throat lozenges may soothe a sore throat, but many are loaded with sugar that clings to your teeth. That sugar fuels bacteria, which can lead to cavities. Instead, opt for sugar-free options, especially those sweetened with xylitol, which helps prevent decay. Avoid ingredients like fructose and corn syrup when you can.

Be Gentle After Nausea or Vomiting

If you’re hit with a stomach bug, avoid brushing immediately after vomiting. Acid from your stomach softens tooth enamel, and brushing too soon can cause damage.

Rinse with water or a solution of water and baking soda first. Then wait 30 minutes before brushing to give your enamel time to recover.

Combat Dry Mouth From Medication

Many common cold and flu remedies, like decongestants and antihistamines, can lead to dry mouth. Without enough saliva, your risk for cavities increases.

Sip water frequently and use sugar-free lozenges or gum to keep saliva flowing. Staying hydrated also helps your body recover faster.

Skip the Sugar—Drink Water Instead

Hydrating is crucial while you’re sick, and water is always the best choice for your smile. Sports drinks and teas with sugar or lemon can cause enamel erosion or cavities. If you’re drinking something acidic or sweet, rinse with water afterward.

Feeling Better Starts With a Healthy Mouth

Even when you’re not feeling your best, a clean mouth can go a long way toward helping you feel more like yourself. If it’s time for a checkup, or you’re worried about your oral health after an illness, Pebble Hills Dental is here to help you protect your smile all year long.
